The Amity Institute of Behavioural Health and Allied Sciences (AIBHAS) held a valedictory function for its Diploma Course in Medico Legal Issues at the AIBHAS Campus recently. 20 officers of the Indian Army, who had successfully completed the 12-day course were awarded diplomas by K K Paul, IPS, Commissioner of Police, Delhi.
The ceremony was preceded by the release of a book on Forensic Science by Paul.
The book, titled, ''Handbook of Forensic Science'' has been edited by Dr Vimala Veeraraghavan, director general, AIBHAS. The book is an edited compilation of academic papers written by experts and professionals from the field of forensic science. M S Rao, chief forensic scientist, Government of India, who has also written the forward to the book said, "The public wants to know the shrouded history of forensic science. This book is a small step towards that end."
Paul congratulated the editor in her efforts and emphasised the growing importance of forensic science in criminal investigation. He said that while the spoken word of the eyewitness was considered substantial evidence in traditional forms of investigations. However, with development in forensics, even the courts now expect that forensic evidence back statements of eyewitnesses.
Veeraraghavan, who was responsible for forming and executing of the course attended by the men-in-uniform remarked that the emphasis was to help the officers get ''hands-on-experience'' in the fields that they have selected. During the course, the Army officers were given training modules on blood sample analysis, forensic medicine, forensic pathology, forensic anthropology, forensic psychiatry, brain mapping, age determination tests, post mortem and statutory assumptions on DNA Fingerprinting. Dr Bharat Singh, trauma specialist, Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital deliberated upon deaths caused by trauma.
